2. What is Water Column and Why is it Important?

The water column is a measure of a material's or garment's waterproofness. When we refer to the water column or hydrostatic head, we are describing the amount of water (measured in millimeters) that one square centimeter of a material can withstand before water penetrates. A higher water column indicates better waterproofing.

• 5000-10,000 mm: The material can withstand moderate rain for an extended period.

• 10,000-15,000 mm: The material can endure heavy rain over an extended period.

• More than 15,000 mm and a waterproof construction: The garment can withstand very heavy rain for a long period.

Even if a material is waterproof, areas like seams, zippers, and pockets must be sealed to prevent water penetration. Taped seams ensure that these vulnerable areas do not allow any water ingress. When we claim a jacket is 100% waterproof, it means it has taped seams as well.

To preserve its waterproof properties, use a gentle washing program and mild detergent. Do not use fabric softeners or bleach. To reactivate surface treatment, you can tumble dry on low heat or iron on a low setting. Always follow the specific washing instructions that come with the jacket.
